Canada has always been a top destination for international students because of its world-class education, multicultural society, and straightforward path to permanent residency (PR). In 2025, Canada introduced new updates to its Express Entry system, making it even more accessible for international graduates.
This blog covers the latest changes and how students from countries like Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, and Nigeria can take advantage of this opportunity.
Express Entry is Canada’s main immigration system used to manage permanent residency applications. It includes the following programs:
Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
International students typically qualify through the CEC after gaining work experience in Canada.
In 2025, IRCC is holding targeted Express Entry draws for:
International graduates with Canadian education
Professionals in high-demand sectors like healthcare, STEM, trades, and education
This means higher chances of getting an Invitation to Apply (ITA) even with a lower CRS score.
Graduates of Canadian universities and colleges now receive more CRS points under:
Level of Education
Canadian Study Experience
Canadian Work Experience
IRCC aims to increase the number of invitations to international graduates to meet labor shortages across the country. Processing time remains 6 months or less.
Complete a post-secondary diploma, Bachelor’s, or Master’s program in Canada.
Gain at least 1 year of full-time Canadian work experience in a skilled job (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3).
Aim for CLB 7 or higher (around IELTS 6.0–6.5 in each band).
Submit your profile and wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) based on CRS score or targeted draw.
Once invited, submit documents and medicals. You can receive PR in as little as 4–6 months.
No job offer required (if applying under CEC)
Targeted draws increase chances of selection
Additional CRS points for Canadian education and work
Pathway to bring family members to Canada
Faster PR = Better settlement and job security
Many Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) also have streams for international graduates:
Ontario International Graduate Stream
British Columbia Tech Pilot
Alberta Graduate Immigration Stream
Atlantic Immigration Program
These give you another route to PR, especially if your CRS score is low.
Canada’s 2025 Express Entry updates are great news for international students. With targeted draws and faster PR pathways, studying in Canada has become even more valuable for students looking to settle and succeed long-term.
