Two of the most popular destinations for Pakistani students are Sweden and Germany — and choosing between them is one of the most common questions we get. Both are excellent; the right answer depends on your priorities. Here’s an honest comparison.
Cost
Germany wins on tuition — most public universities are free, so you fund living costs only. Sweden charges non-EU tuition (SEK 80,000–160,000/year), though scholarships can offset it. If budget is the deciding factor, Germany is usually cheaper.
Language & daily life
Sweden runs in English more comfortably in daily life and has over 1,000 English-taught master’s programmes. Germany has many English master’s too, but German helps far more for part-time work and staying afterwards.
Post-study work
Germany offers an 18-month job-seeker visa and a huge job market. Sweden offers a residence permit to seek work and a clear path to permanent residence. Both are strong; Germany’s market is larger, Sweden’s process is smoother in English.
Application & visa
Sweden is simpler and centralised (one Universityadmissions.se application). Germany now requires an APS certificate for Pakistani students and a blocked account, which adds steps.
So which should you choose?
- Choose Germany if free tuition and a large job market matter most, and you’re open to learning some German.
- Choose Sweden if you want a smooth, English-first experience, strong quality of life, and scholarships to offset fees.
