Your first month abroad: housing, banking and registration

The hardest part of studying abroad is rarely the studying. It’s the first four weeks — finding somewhere to live, opening a bank account, and registering with the authorities, often in a language you don’t speak yet.

Housing first, and early

In many student cities, accommodation is the binding constraint. Join university housing queues the moment you have an offer, and treat private listings with healthy scepticism — deposit scams target new arrivals.

The registration chain

Countries differ, but the pattern is similar: you register your address, which unlocks a personal number, which unlocks a bank account, which unlocks almost everything else. Do them in the right order and the month goes smoothly.

  • Register your address
  • Get your personal / tax number
  • Open a bank account
  • Sort insurance and a local SIM

None of it is difficult once you know the order — it’s just unfamiliar. A little planning turns a stressful month into an ordinary one.
