Living in Sweden as a Pakistani Student: Halal Food, Housing, Weather & Community

Moving to Sweden is a big step — and as a Pakistani student you probably have very practical questions: Is halal food available? Where will I pray? How do I find housing? How cold is it, really? Here’s an honest guide to living in Sweden as a Pakistani student.

Halal food

Halal food is widely available in Swedish cities. You’ll find halal grocery stores and restaurants in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Lund and most university towns, and many supermarkets stock halal-labelled products. Cooking at home is both cheaper and easy with local halal butchers.

Prayer and community

Most cities have mosques and prayer spaces, and many campuses provide quiet/prayer rooms. There’s an active Pakistani and Muslim student community — student associations and WhatsApp groups make it easy to settle in and find support.

Housing — start early

Housing is the one thing you must sort as early as possible. Student housing runs on queues (e.g., SSSB in Stockholm, university housing offices, and platforms like Bostad Direkt). Apply the moment you’re admitted, and consider first-hand student accommodation to avoid sublet scams.

Weather — it’s manageable

Winters are cold and dark, especially November–February. It’s very manageable with proper layers, a good coat, and vitamin D. Summers are bright and beautiful, and campuses are built for the climate.

Getting set up: personnummer & banking

For stays of 12+ months you can register with the Tax Agency for a personnummer, which unlocks banking, healthcare and more. Until then, a coordination number and a student bank account get you started.
